The coast redwood is the world’s tallest tree and is one of
three Sequoia tree species, along with the Dawn Redwood, and the Giant
Sequoia. The Coast Redwoods grow in natural stands along a thin coastal area on
the Pacific coast in Northern California, and Southern Oregon.
Before we get to the actual tallest plant in the world, lets talk
about its little brother “Stratosphere Giant” which is also located in Northern
California (yes it’s true everything is bigger in California) located in the
Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The “Stratosphere Giant,” stands 369 feet.
Now on to the Worlds tallest tree which is being preserved by
scientists like Steve Sillet from Humboldt State University who don’t want
to see the worlds tallest tree get destroyed by tourism. The tree which is nicknamed
Hyperion” lies somewhere in the Redwood National Park, and stands 379
feet 4 inches tall. Hyperion was first discovered on August 25th, 2006 by
naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylo.
Unlike another historically large California Sequioa tree, “General
Sherman,” Hyperion is actually expected to continue growing. The landmark
General Sherman will not get any taller because the top of the tree is dead.
There are tree’s in the park that have more wood density and
larger trunks such as Del Norte Titan, but Hyperion is the tallest.
Below is a close up look at the majestic “Hyperion” tree.
